Friends of Dundee Natural Areas (FDNA) and Friends of the Fox River (FOTFR) and Wild Ones of Greater Kane County host Nancy Lamia of Wild Ones of Greater Kane County’s Start in Your Yard initiative. She reprises the program she did for the Dundee Garden Club.
The program is for both novice and experienced gardeners. Nancy provides enough of the big picture concepts for participants to understand the importance of incorporating native plants into suburban landscapes, while emphasizing practical first steps. Garden club members left with actionable ideas for incorporating native plants in their own home gardens.
The vibe from most people outside of the conservation community is that they are open to incorporating native plants in their home gardens because they understand that it’s the right thing to do — but they’re hesitant if “native” translates to a weedy or an unkempt look. This likely describes the vast majority of the gardening public. That’s why the presentation to the garden Club was so effective — it served as the bridge between “I understand this concept” and “I’m ready to put this into practice by taking small steps.”
I believe that helping folks understand bigger ecological issues can start with just one native plant.
